Thea Lafond Lands Short Of Podium As Rojas Raises World Triple Jump Record In Belgrade.
Belgrade, Serbia – Day 3 of the 2022 World Athletics Indoor Championships boasted Dominica’s Thea Lafond in the Womens Tripple Jump Final.
Lafond’s jumping was nothing short of spectacular as she went “head and shoulders” with Maryna Bekh-Romanchuck of Ukraine and Kimberly Williams of Jamaica who finished second and third respectively. Her opening jump of 14.53 meters, being her best, was ranked third up until a 6th and final 14.74 effort by Bekh-Romanchuck of Ukraine. Yulimar Rojas of Venezuela also recorded her best jump on her final attempt to win her third straight Triple Jump Title whilst bettering her own world record.
Lafond finished the competition in 4th place which is a major improvement from her previous showing at the 2018 World Athletics Indoor Championships.
To put into perspective Thea’s competitiveness. She boasts a personal best of 14.62 meters which would actually tie for third place at the championships. On that account, it was definitely not the best competition for the senior National Record Holder. Looking forward, Lafond will take the lessons from this competition and strategize in an effort to produce her best when it matters the most.
President of the Dominica Athletics Association, Godwin Dorsette, gave his commentary where he mentioned that he is very proud of Thea and is ecstatic about the reminder of her season.
