One New Carifta Qualifier, Multiple Notable Performances At National Junior Champs

Roseau, Dominica- In a meeting that the DAA’s President (Godwin Dorsette) said is the highlight of the 2020 season thus far, Track and Field saw a number of great performances at the National Junior Championships on Sunday. There was one new Carifta qualifier and multiple personal bests (PB’s) recorded at the one day event.

Notable Double Champion Performances

Joshua St. Jean

In the under 17 men’s 100m dash, Joshua St. Jean of the Dominica Grammar School (D.G.S) stormed to victory in a time of 10.80 seconds. St. Jean’s stunning performance did not only qualify him for the Carifta Games but remains a national junior leading time in the event. Andrev Nelson’s 11.2 and Peter Daniel’s 11.4 secured second and third places respectively.

The much anticipated 200m dash was a sweep clean by the D.G.S duo of Joshua St. Jean and Lequante Alphonse. Despite not having the best of starts in the event, St. Jean won by quickly switching gears to overtake his rivals. He clocked a personal best time of 23.1 seconds.

Kody Parillion

Delivering PB’s have become a bi weekly hubby for Kody Parillion. Parillion, who is no stranger to success, displayed his dominance in the under 20 category by completing the 200m, 400m sprint double. He recorded a time of 24.3 seconds in the 200m and 54.3 seconds in the 400m.

Treneese Hamilton

Treneese Hamilton, an already qualified athlete for the Carifta Games topped the field events by recording decisive victories in both the shot-put and discuss throws. She landed the meeting best throws of 35.72m in the discuss and 12.63m in the shot-put.

Chester Durant

Chester Durant joined the list of double winners by turning in the fastest times in the 800m and 1500m of the day. Leading both races from gun to tape, Durant ran times of 2:10.6 in the 800m run and 4:48.8 in the 1500m run. Having ran the 800m on home soil for a total of four times and the 1500m for a total of three, the young speedster remains unbeaten in both events this season.

Nathan Telemaque

Big PB’s for Nathan Telemaque as he crushed the men’s jumps in the under 17 category. He cleared 1.65 meters in the high jump and secured the win in the long jump with a leap of 5.36 meters. After a very successful field day, A cheerful Telemaque made his appearance on the track to finish second in the 800m with a time of 2:21.3 seconds.

Peterson Daniel, Keva Pierre, Sarwan Ogiste, Joanna Joseph, Alika St. John, Keyoni Esprit, Dale Dangleben, Alianne George, Kylie Royer, Mickayla Joseph, Danielle Green, Omarie Morancie, Abini St. Jean, Meralda Thomas, Tisha Charles, Carla Bunche.

President Godwin Dorsette Remarks

The meeting turned out to be a great success for the Dominica Athletics Association (DAA). Godwin Dorsette, President of the DAA said, “The support and turn-out of the meeting was remarkable and the DAA is proud to be a part of such vital aspect of youth development.” Also, having numbers upwards, the support from spectators was commendable. Mr. Dorsette further expressed that it is gratifying to watch the athletes progress from development meet #1 to current day and that spectators can anticipate spectacular performances in future meetings.
