More CARIFTA Qualifiers from Secondary School Champs
The Secondary School Under 21 National Championships was held in Portsmouth on February 26 and 27.
The Pierre Charles Secondary School (PCSS) girls team took home the title beating North Eastern Comprehensive School (NECS) 131 to 122. The PCSS Boys team tied NECS for first, both finishing with 97 points.
Stand out performers included Judah Corriette of PCSS who perviously qualified for CARIFTA in the U17 boys 800 meter and 1500 meter. Corriette scored 28 points for his team in the under 17 category winning the 400 meter, 800 meter, 1500 meter, and high jump. Corriette set meet records in all events but the high jump. Osborne Kok of Saint Mary’s Academy (SMA) finished with 19 points in the boys U21 category. Kok won both the 200 meter and the 400 meter and finished second in the 100 meter, setting a new meet record of 22.0 seconds in the 200 meter. His performance of 10.7 seconds in the 100 meter met the qualify time for CARIFTA.
Sherrine Serrant of Isaiah Thomas Secondary School (ITSS) scored 21 points in the girls U17 category. Serrant won the long jump, 100 meter, and 200 meter. Her best long jump of 5.05 meter set a new meet record. Jessica Benjamin of PCSS was the top athlete for U21 girls scoring 21 points. She won the triple jump, finished third in the 100 meter and 200 meter, fourth in the long jump, and fifth in the high jump.
In all three athletes qualified for CARIFTA at the meet, Kok in the U20 100 meter, Kerael Matthew of Dominica State College (DSC) in the U20 100 meter, and Anelia Austrie of NECS in the girls U17 high jump.
Luan Gabrielle of ITSS who qualified for CARIFTA previously in the 200 meter met the qualifying time for the 100 meter in the girls U20 category.
Kellandie Bully of ITSS who previously qualified in the 800 meter also qualified in the 1500 meter at a CARIFTA preparation meet in Martinique on March 2nd. Her time of 5:03.42 is a new U17 national record.
The LIME CARIFTA Games 2013 are to be held in the Bahamas from March 28 to April 2, 2013. To date the DAAA has 10 qualified athletes 9 of whom who are based at home and one overseas, Thea Lafond. The deadline for qualifying is March 10, 2013 and on this date the DAAA will be hosting its National Junior Championship in Grand Bay. The DAAA expects more athletes names will be added to team Dominica for the CARIFTA Games 2013. The names of the qualifiers are:
