History Of The DAA
The Dominica Athletics Association (DAA) formerly the Dominica Amateur Athletics Association (DAAA) – is the governing body of the athletics sport: track and field, cross-country and road racing—in the Commonwealth Of Dominica. A committee responsible for Athletics was formed in the Commonwealth of Dominica in 1983. Some of the key committee members at that time were Mr. Oswald Savarin, Anthony Agar, Hodge Oliver, Thompson Fontain, Claudia Charles, Jennifer Julien, Felix Wilson, and Julius Lewis.
The DAAA, the successor to the committee became a member of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) formerly the International Amateur Athletics Federation in 1986 and by extension, the DAAA also became a member of the Central American and Caribbean Athletics Congress in 1986. The DAAA is a charter member of the Dominica Olympic Committee, which was formed in 1985; the OECS Athletics Congress 1989; and the North American, Central American and Caribbean Confederation (NACAC) formed in 1999. As a DAAAIOC member, DAAA athletes can compete in the Central American and Caribbean Games, Pan American Games, Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games, Olympic Youth Games and Commonwealth Youth Games.
Association Presidents
In 1985, Mr. Oswald Saverin was elected as the association’s first President. Since then, others who have served as president of the DAAA are: Mr. Anthony Agar: 1987-1996; Mr. Andy Burkard: 1997-1999; Mr. Cedric Harris: 1999-2000; Ms. Sharon Philogen: 2000-2008; Mr. Godwin Dorsette: 2008-2012; Mr. Cedric Harris: 2012-2016; and the current president Mr. Godwin Dorsette 2016-2020
